  • You are here in the heart of the old Rochefort arsenal, built from 1666 on the initiative of Colbert. During 250 years, more than 500 ships were built here. Close to the Corderie Royale, a 17th century rope factory, the arcaded building in which you are standing was built in 1779 and is said to be built on stilts. It served as a guardhouse, housing the soldiers responsible for guarding the arsenal.
