Fort Lupin

  • A true masterpiece of Vauban's fortifications, Fort Lupin was built in Saint-Nazaire-sur-Charente in 1683. It was used to defend the Royal Fountain of Lupin (only 3 in France). Built in 1671, it was used to replenish the fresh water supplies of naval vessels before they sailed. Situated on the edge of a marsh, this half-moon fort is surrounded by a moat that protects it from the land.
