Fort Lupin, completed in 1689, is one of the major elements of the defensive system to control and defend the access to the Naval Dockayrd of Rochefort.
Vauban had developed a small fort combining the advantages of a semi-circular low battery that carried out grazing shots in the chains of the ships and a tower which allowed for diving musketeer shootings to sweep ship's decks.
