  • Over the 11th century, the castle, of Fouras-Les-Bains was built to control the Charente estuary and institute a toll. Key element to the Charente's defense system, Fort Vauban hosts the regional history museum in its donjon.
    The site is listed as " France's museum".
    Ten rooms relate the town's history, its environment, and - more specifically - its maritime, military and seaside past.
