The first Royal Fountain was built around 1676. The Lupin fountain is an important link in the drinking water supply network of the port of Rochefort, as it was the first spring to be tapped, enabling the ships of the Arsenal to be supplied.

The Royal Fountain of Lupin and its hydraulic network which are almost intact, including the Fountain of the Dead (1676) and that of Fontpourry, a village located at 3 400 metres from its reservoir. The whole makes a unique ensemble for the country, as it is one of the only three ship supply points preserved today (the other two are in Brest and Belle-Ile). At the beginning of the 20th century, the fountain was still in use.
