At the mouth of the Charente, visitors are drawn into a special atmosphere. Nature's accomplice
of nature, its whims and its riches, the Soumard marsh has been and still is a place of coveted
of human covetousness and control.
Please note: the wooden footbridge behind Fort Vasou (piles) has been closed to the public by order of the Town Hall since 2 June 2023. The loop trail around the Cabane marsh is currently unavailable.
Built from 1672, on the right bank of the Charente, Fort Vasou could accommodate several hundred men and about fifty cannons. In 1757, the fort was damaged by the English. Remodelled after this battle, it incorporates a semi-circular battery with a diameter of about 130m, to which a barracks and a shell storage facility have been added. Decommissioned by the army and sold to a private individual in 1950, it is listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments.
