Discovery tour: The Crib: Geoffroy, painter of women and children

A fervent republican and official painter for Jules Ferry's brand new Ministry of Public Education, Jean Geoffroy (1853-1924) was keen to paint a sincere and sympathetic picture of the living conditions of the working classes, particularly children. ‘La crèche’, an 1897 painting on display at the Musée Hèbre, illustrates this interest in the social reforms that helped to improve the lives of women and children during the Third Republic.
