Great-grandson of General Gourgaud, Napoleon's companion in exile on St Helena, Marie-Amédée-Henri-Napoléon, Baron Gourgaud
(1881-1944) was a collector and patron of the arts. With the help and fortune of his wife Eva Gebhard (1876-1959), a wealthy New York heiress, he built up one of the most important collections of modern art of the 1930s.
