Although metal music has long been perceived as marginal by the media, it has never been divorced from the society in which it evolved. From its very beginnings, metal has had a strong identity, taking up singular positions, sometimes in opposition to those in power, often in opposition to religion.
At the same time, from Black Sabbath to Metallica, Burzum to Dark Tranquillity and more modern bands such as Eluveitie, The Architects and Gojira, they have all questioned their relationship with nature. A study of the history of metal and its sub-genres since the 1970s reveals a number of singular moments that help us to understand the preoccupations of those involved in the scene, and to link them to contemporary societal issues. For example, metal culture has always played a part in shaping what is known today as an ecological conscience.
By taking up various visual and musical examples, as well as providing an analysis of empirical and statistical data, the lecture will shed light on the ways in which metal culture is engaged, both by artists and by metalheads themselves.
The speaker : Corentin Charbonnier, PhD in Anthropology - ATER University of Tours
Following a thesis on HellFest as a place of pilgrimage for metalheads, he continued his research into metal culture and, at the same time, set up a publishing business to promote scientific culture in this field.
Co-curator of the ‘Diabolus In Musica’ exhibition at the Philarmonie de Paris, he is continuing to produce images as well as numerous studies on audiences.
