Stupidity has two ways of being,’ said Honoré de Balzac, “either it keeps quiet or it speaks”. In Les Galets au Tilleul sont plus petits qu'au Havre (which makes swimming much more pleasant), not only does it speak, it makes us laugh. And it touches us... This stupidity, which is in fact an exacerbated form of futility or existential fear of silence, is illuminated here by four irresistible dancer-actors.

Intermingling improvised theatre and choreographic score, they say nothing of interest, claim no ideas, perform no feats. They simply conjure up a range of scenes involving psychological hostage-taking, from which it is often difficult to escape. We've all been there: faced with someone who talks without interruption, bouncing off their own speech ad infinitum, and often to say nothing!
On a bare stage, with only ten chairs as props, four explorers of the banal prove that there is a real wealth of sensitivity, humour and poetry to be found in this type of situation. Through the characters they bring to life, we are led to scrutinise moments of annoyance, incomprehension, solitude and self-sacrifice. And while stupidity inhabits every scene in the show, the aim is not to put it on trial, but rather to celebrate it tenderly. After all, it spares no one. These characters are a bit like us too!
